Staff briefed the Committee on the bill. (Attachment 13) There were no questions.
The Chairman recognized Heidi Feyer-Smith. (Attachment 14) The Love, Chloe Foundation is named after her daughter who lost her battle with cancer. She said their mission is to provide financial assistance to Kansas families who have a child diagnosed with cancer, support the Monkey in My Chair program which helps kids stay connected with their peers while they are away from school and to fund ground-breaking research for childhood cancer. She said having this distinctive plate will bring much needed awareness in Kansas as well as anywhere their supporters travel.
The next proponent was Erica Souter. (Attachment 15) According to Ms. Souter, in 2012 they began BabyJay's Legacy of Hope, a 501c(3) charitable organization based out of Lawrence that assists families during their pediatric cancer journey. She said they are committed to helping families with all the things that health insurance doe not cover, such as rent, utilities, car payments, groceries, clothes, school fees, etc. Mrs. Souter said she was sharing her story because this license plate program would help provide gas cards and other much needed financial support to organizations like theirs.
The last conferee was Lisa Ward. (Attachment 16) She said they know first-hand the financial destruction caused by battling childhood cancer. She said for that reason they support the new Kansas tag to benefit in a very tangible way families like theirs. She said the adoption of this license plate does two very important things. First, it shows awareness of childhood cancer and solidarity with those in the battle. Second, it is an immediate way to financially support Kansas families faced with the inherent burden of traveling for treatment to a children's hospital.
Representative Howe spoke briefly to thank the ladies for coming forward with their stories.
There were no other proponents, opponents and no neutrals so Chairman Proehl closed the hearing on SB69.
Announcements
The Chairman announced that the next Committee meeting will be on March 11th. The Committee will hear SB67, SB95 and SB99.
