The Chairman recognized Brad Smoot (Attachment 8) Mr. Smoot said the former Senate President gave much of his life in service to our state and nation. He had been elected to the Kansas House of Representatives, then appointed to the Senate in 1975. Senator Burke was later elected to the Kansas Senate and re-elected for the next 20 years. He served as Chair of several committees during that time. Mr. Smoot concluded by saying Senator Burke was a man of honor, courage and dedication and dedicating this section of Kansas Highway 7 as the Senator Bud Burke Memorial Highway gives us a chance to recognize a man who gave decades of his life in the service of Kansans.
Chairman Proehl drew the Committee's attention to written testimony submitted by Mrs. Debbie Burke. (Attachment 9)
There were no other proponents, opponents or neutrals so the Chairman closed the hearing on SB26 and opened the hearing on SB68.
